Presidents Picnic
President’s Picnic at Whalen Island:
From the desk of the Prez:
Saturday July 12; online reservations are by far the easiest here! Go to www.reservations.co.tillamook.or.us. You can also call them at (503) 965-6085. These are tent/RV sites only. This is a SUPER GOOD TIME where the club’s prez, yours truly, prepares some delicious meal, serve you and cater to your every whim... Yeah right, keep on dreaming! At least the “delicious meal” part is true. There is a beautiful lagoon which fills up at high tide. A couple years ago, Jason and I had a great time rowing two inflatable kayaks over to the mouth at night! If you have a canoe or a kayak, bring it with since we might do so again. Come and visit around a camp fire while getting to know your fellow divers (much) better! There might even be some scuba diving – you just never know...

North Jetty
This is a shore dive with low visibility and high current. Plan on two dives, first dive meet at 7:00am and in the water at 7:30am. Second dive we will meet at 11:45am and in the water at 12:15pm.

Club Meeting
David Aylward
David Aylward will join us to share his extensive background living and diving in the Philippines. He will discuss dive logistics and opportunities, as well as the geography and culture of the islands.

Club Meeting
Maggie Grace
Topic: Hyperbaric Technology
Don’t miss the June meeting where our guest speaker, Maggie Grace, a Certified Hyperbaric Technologist, will lead us through her high-pressure world!
Maggie will be sharing her knowledge of hyperbaric facilities and applications, including the types of chambers, the kinds of medical conditions treated, as well as the procedures for addressing Decompression Sickness. This is a chance to have all your questions answered from someone who has done it all.
Join us at 6:30PM, June 5 at Roundtable Pizza on Boones Ferry Road in Lake Oswego for this fascinating topic.

Clear Lake Club Dive
It’s commonly known that Oregon’s forests are wonderful destinations for hiking, camping, paddling, fishing, and so much more. But there is also a spot in Willamette National Forest that is famous in the scuba community for its freshwater diving.
Clear Lake lives up to its name with 100 to 200 feet of visibility depending on conditions and time of year. Below the surface you can see vibrant green meadows of algae and towering tree trunks preserved for thousands of years. Near-freezing groundwater that has been filtered through layers of volcanic rock flows out of vents at the lake floor, and several varieties of trout make this submerged forest their home.
Date: Saturday, May 17
Time: 11:00am & 10:00pm
Location: 60700 Hwy 126 Sister, OR 97759
What to expect:
Visibility is 100 to 200 feet depending on conditions.
Water temperature is 30 to 40 degrees.
Nearly freezing ground water that has been filtered through layers of volcanic rock flows.
Easy shore entry.
Way to go OSC! We had 14 divers attend!
Divers came from as far away as Bend and Vancouver. Water temperature of 38 degrees which went from "cold to cool", as some would say.

Club Meeting
Our Speaker was Stefan Stohler who shared with us his time with the Tropical Research and Conservation Center.

TRACC: “Saving the ocean, one coral, one turtle and one shark at a time.”
Our guest speaker for our May 1 meeting was Stephan Stoler, an educator and conservationist from the Topical Research and Conservation Centre (TRACC) on Pom Pom Island in Malaysia. Stephan has been a volunteer and teacher at the Centre.
TRACC's overall mission is to protect turtles and restore reefs in the Celebes Sea. Their ongoing projects involve reef surveys, coral transplanting, turtle conservation, crown of thorn collection and community projects.
Volunteer divers can stay at TRACC for 2 to 12 weeks. In addition to diving in support of conservation projects, volunteers can take courses in marine science, PADI courses and divemaster internships.
Living conditions are simple on the island- TRACC is not a resort. Breakfasts are self-serve, and lunches and dinners are buffet style. Visiting Pom Pom is focused on learning, restoration, and improving the island.
Tuesdays through Saturdays are work days. There are typically two work dives and one leisure dive each day. Work dives support TRACC projects. Sunday is a recreational day with trips and fun dives. Monday is a dry day, focusing on land activities.
The cost of the two-week stay is 1300 Euro (about $1500). This includes unlimited diving and transfers from the airport. Longer stays are discounted, with a lower cost per day.
A vacation at TRACC is a unique opportunity to dive, participate in conservation projects, and connect with like minded divers.

Old Boathouse Garibaldi
The lumber dock at Garibaldi is a favorite of many Oregon divers. It is a mellow, easy dive that is almost always a good bet at high tide even if a storm is raging out on the jetty at Barview. The water is shallow and there isn’t much current here. The piers have lots of marine life on them to explore. Sometimes you can find a crab or two that are of legal size and occasionally a perch will swim by that’s worth spearing although hunting isn’t the main reason to come dive this site.

Titlow
For anyone diving this site for the first time, approach with caution. The Tacoma Narrows has some particularly strong currents. Don’t let the pristine waters have you throwing caution to the wind. You’ll want to dive site at the slack tide—high or low. While this site is suitable for beginners when dived at the right time, I haven’t rated it as such because I find that most new divers have very little understanding of how to dive new sites safely, if for no other reason than dive training agencies tend to leave explaining what to look out for and how to assess sites to the instructors and divemasters.

Seacrest Park Cove 2
Also commonly referred to as “Seacrest Park Cove 2” or just “Cove 2”, this dive site is one of the most popular in Seattle. Stairs on either side lead to a mildly steep rocky beach entry. Dive site has a gradual depth to 90’ with many artificial features that host marine life. No-dive boat lane is marked by yellow and orange buoys.

Club Meeting
A big thank you to everyone who made it out John McGinity’s club meeting!
And a special thanks to John McGinity and Tony Bass for their fantastic presentation!! It was one of the most interesting presentations we’ve had in a long time.
Jason came through yet again and brought his new wireless toy which cast the feed signal of the presentation to both TVs. No more contorting your neck to see what is happening on the one screen.
Great news: John McGinity is now our new VP. Thanks John for stepping up to the plate - I know you will be a huge asset for the club, doing double duty as VP and as co-dive coordinator!
If anyone would like to give a helping hand with organizing & coordinating dive trips, we would really love to hear from you.

Les Davis Club Dive
Les Davis Pier is a shore accessible salt water dive site, located at Ruston Way, Tacoma, WA. This dive site has an average rating of 3.42 out of 5 from 19 scuba divers. The maximum depth is 121-130ft/37-40m. The average visibility is 5-10ft/2-3m.
Great site for new and experienced divers. Ample parking, concessions and restrooms on site. Artificial reefs with a variety of life for photographers. Beach entry via new concrete stairway.
It’s a very popular site, and has many of the scrapped pieces from the old Tacoma narrows bridge dumped there creating a nice artificial reef. Lots of classes going on here but its still not to bad. It also makes a nice place for night diving. As a side note, you do need to be aware of the currents in the Hood Canal, on high exchanges the current can unexpectedly pick up rapidly.
After the dive…
First official club dive of the year! It was a beautiful dry day, but a bit chilly. We had five divers who braved the cold water to venture into the depths. Water temp was 50 degrees and visibility was between 10-15 feet. The sea-life was out and about. We saw many species of fish as well as nudibranchs and a small ray. After the dive we all enjoyed some Jacks BBQ. Hope to see you at the next dive.
